It was at the tender age of ten that Marc Khaïm Seligmann made his first flute.
" I was already a shepherd and to
pass the time
I fiddled around making little
two-reed flutes ".
Much later, in the sixties, he took off the road to India and lived successively
in Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and along the way,
he was
initiated into the world of traditional musics...
"It was during my first voyage that my interest in flutes really developed. "
His passion for indian music led him to meet others and eventually resulted in him beginning to work for Unesco. Between 1970 and 1975, he was entrusted by Alain Danielou (Unesco Musical Department) to produce recordings of sacred music.
" Five years of
magic which allowed me to meet and know the greatest musicians and luthiers of
India. At the same time,it gave me the possibility to study the ancestral
methods of fabrication of the " bansuris " and it was
because of this
that I was able to perfect my understanding of bamboo ".
On his return to Europe, he installed himself in Spain before coming to live
in
the foothills of Cévennes.

Seli flutes are made in chromatic scale, in every key. |
Because he needs a special specy of bamboo, regulary,
he goes back at
the best season to Asia to select and cut himself at the
suitable lunar month
the best canes.
Then, each bamboo is strictly chosen according to the quality and density
of the fibre, its staightness, the length from knot to knot and its aptitude to become, after different treatments in order to achieve a better music, a high quality instrument.
As well, as other secrets which give SELI flutes all their quality and originality.
" For me, each
and every flute is a new challenge : to achieve the perfection of sound through
the quality of vibrations, to give the musical colour appropriate to each
universe whether it be traditional music, classical jazz or contemporary."
